Mulkirigala Rock Temple
Mulkirigala Rock Temple (also known as Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya) is a magnificent ancient Buddhist temple complex located in the southern province of Sri Lanka, near the town of Tangalle. Perched atop a 205-meter-high rock, the temple is a striking historical and cultural landmark, often referred to as the “Little Sigiriya” due to its resemblance to the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
Dating back to the 3rd century AD, Mulkirigala is believed to have been built during the reign of King Saddhatissa. The temple consists of a series of natural caves and rock-cut shrines spread across multiple tiers of the rock. Each level reveals beautifully preserved cave temples adorned with ancient murals, reclining Buddha statues, and inscriptions in Brahmi script.
As visitors ascend the rock via stone steps, they pass through tranquil terraces and chambers rich in religious art and history. The panoramic view from the summit offers a breathtaking sight of lush forests and rural landscapes, making the climb both spiritually and visually rewarding.
Mulkirigala Rock Temple is not just a place of worship—it is a testament to Sri Lanka’s deep-rooted Buddhist heritage and a hidden gem for those seeking history, spirituality, and scenic beauty in one destination.
